FOOD TRIP | Where to Eat in Binondo?

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

It was my 5th time already in Binondo for a food trip but have never really blogged about it until now. Thanks to Robbie who introduced this foodie experience to me when he organized a year ago for PTB Bagets in conquering some of the best places to eat in the area. That was my first actually. Since then Binondo food trip has been one of the things that I've been really enjoying doing to. In fact, a great food adventure for satisfying food and some authentic Chinese cuisine.

From the multiple visits that I had in Binondo I was able to try at least seven restaurants already which I could say these restaurants didn't disappoint me, may it be for taste or for a mere experience. Now, here are some of these restaurants that I was able to try during those food trips that I had in Binondo.

Dong Bei Dumplings
Location: E. T. Yuchengco, Manila
Date of visit: November 10, 2012

This is the first from the array of food places in Binondo that I was able to try. The restaurant is obviously known for dumplings. The area isn't that restaurant like. It's like a small space with only few tables available to dine in.

We were able to try Kuchay Stuff Dumplings and Fried Pancake Dumplings which are actually good for sharing.

Both tasted good but we enjoyed the pancake dumplings more than the stuff dumplings.

Wai Ying Fastfood
Location: 832 Benavides St., Sta Cruz, Manila
Date of visit: November 10, 2012

If I were to choose which of the restaurants from Binondo is my favorite then it would be Wai Ying. Every food that I ordered on this fastfood restaurant was never a disappointment.

I love their Hakaw and Fried rice. The Lemon Chicken rice is a good choice, as well. Oh, never leave Wai Ying without trying their luscious ice cold milk tea. Too bad, they ran out of jelly the last time I ordered the drink.

LGA Fastfood Estero
Location: Brgy. 297, Manila
Date of visit: November 10, 2012

If you're up for some food adventure then go to Estero and try their exotic offering, frog legs. The exotic food comes into different type of dishes.  But for us, having it fried is the best option.

Since we went to Binondo to try everything our stomach can take in, then the frog legs is not an exception. We ordered a plate of fried frog legs and shared it with our group. Everyone of us took a piece of it and had their timid bite of this exotic food.

It tasted like chicken but it's too bony making it hard for us to eat the meat alone. Though I can't say I enjoyed eating the frog legs but for the sake of experience, it was a nice food adventure after all. I only tried one and never get a piece of it afterwards.

Cafe Mezzanine
Location: 650 Ongpin corner Nueva Streets, Binondo, Manila City, Metro Manila
Date of visit: October 1, 2011

You think the exotic experience ends in Estero? Cited by CNNGo's must try dish, the CafĂ© Mezzanine's Soup No. 5 is a dish to try to complete you good Binondo food trip. As we all know, Soup No. 5 is made from bulls' testicles. Dare to taste it?

We ordered one to try it but the idea of how it was made kept on popping into my mind whenever I'm about to take it in. I think I was only able to have one or two table spoon of this soup and never had tried it again until now.

Aside from the soup no. 5, which is said to be aphrodisiac, our group also ordered Kiampong, a beef soup and a fried pork dish.

Shining Star
Location: 739 Ongpin St. cor Salazar St., Binondo Manila
Date of visit: November 10, 2012

Refresh yourselves with Cogon, a root juice. It is said that the juice is rich in vitamins and healthy for the body system. A glass of this juice costs PHP 15.00.

Tasty Dumplings
Location: 620 Ongpin St. Binondo, Manila
Date of visit: November 10, 2012

It isn't dumplings that we're after for on this fast food restaurant but their tasty noodle soup.

Their pork chop noodle soup is a tasty surprise. The pork chop somehow tasted sweet but was actually good; and it tasted better when dipped into the noodle soup.

I must say, the soup is actually good for two when you're already done with some of the restaurants in the area.

Maki Place
Location: 931 Benavidez St. Binondo, Manila
Date of visit: April 15, 2012

It is said that the restaurant offers savory and originally cooked noodles but when we visited the place, we ordered rice meals to fill our hungry stomachs.

Rosso Asian Kitchen
Location: 850 Sabino Padilla St. Binondo, Manila
Date of visit: November 10, 2012

We had Ji Gong Bao on this restaurant, their version of shabu-shabu

We were given a pot with cooked chicken dipped with mild spicy sauce. We had cheese balls, squid balls and some vegetables to add up on the dish. It was good actually but some of my friends wasn't able to like it. Maybe we lack on some ingredients or may they are not a fan of spicy food.

The Original Salido Restaurant
Location: 839 Ongpin St. Sta Cruz Manila
Date of visit: March 12, 2013

Showing who their customers are, it only proves that this restaurant is a must try when you have your Binondo food trip. This restaurant is much popular to older generation but the food and its taste which is still savoring as it stays longer. It's still has the best and great tasting dishes and meal.

During our visit, we ordered Salido Rice for PHP 145.00, Chopsuey Guisado Salido Restaurant for PHP 215.00 and Chopsuey Guisado for PHP 165.00.

Eng Bee Tin
Location: Ongpin, Manila

Never leave Binondo without buying some hopia in Eng Bee Tin for you to take home.

I love their custard and ube-custard flavors of hopia. :D

Those visits on these restaurants and food places is so satisfying not only with the variety of food that I've eaten but with moments shared with my foodie companions. Binondo is indeed an ultimate place to taste some good food adventure.

Disclaimer: I'm not a professional food blogger so bear with the words I used in describing my experience on these restaurants. I would just like to share the places that we've tried in the area.

  1. We in Kamusta love Eng Bee Tin, and ESPECIALLY Dong Bei! It's good to see articles like this that show other places, like Rosso, to discover.
